I got a bunch of leashes delivered yesterday from Crow Haley...San Diego, CA. I've been carrying them for years, but yesterday took a closer look at the packaging.

Looks like a normal leash, right?

Now, you’re probably wondering what’s the difference between a “1966 Banana” and a “Classic.” I was wondering the same thing so I had Rich give me a little feedback on this “1966 Banana”. Here’s what he had to say…

We took down the 1966 Banana that was hanging on the ceiling in the shop, spent a half a day taking some measurements and made a 9’6″ and a 10’0″ for stock as seen below.

Here’s the 9’6″ 1966 Banana we made for stock. Board #30301. It has a 1″ Balsa stringer, a tail block, and some color on the hot coat to give it that old school vibe.

"Classic" VS. "1966 Banana"

The blue “Classic” on the left is 9’10″ and the “1966 Banana” on the right is a 10’0″ but it’s close enough for a visual comparison. Notice the “Classic” has a more pulled in tail, smaller tail block, is wider at the mid-point, and wider through the nose. The “1966″ Banana has a straighter/narrower outline.

What can I expect out of these boards?
The “1966 Banana” is literally that…a Banana from 1966. These boards tend to have a pretty narrow and straight outline and a flatter rocker. This one will definitely set trim pretty easily. Breaking that trim, or in other words, turning this board, will be a bit more challenging than any other board in our lineup at the same length. If you have a sense of humor, then you’ll have fun on this one. And yes, it noserides but not as well as our “Noserider” model.
The “Classic” was designed in the 80′s using all of the knowledge gained through the longboard years of the 60′s, this board has the glide that was so important, and a turn that rivals the best design from that era. This one has more curve in the outline than the 1966 Banana.This is a great board for someone who wants the best of everything from those golden years.
What kind of rails do these boards have?
Both boards have 50/50 rails that are full. These boards are stable.
Where do you see these boards performing the best?
Both will perform well at San Onofre, Cardiff, or Bolsa Chica on a peaky day. Maybe Rincon, Malibu, or Trestles with nobody out! Lot’s of people in the lineup means more maneuvering around them while going down the line. These boards will not maneuver very quickly so good luck dodging the crowd at first peak, Malibu on these.
Who would benefit most from this board?
A “1966 Banana” would benefit a better-than-average surfer looking for something different and challenging.
A “Classic” would benefit an average to better-than-average surfer looking for a novelty ride that is challenging but not as challenging as the “1966 Banana”.
Basically…
Think of surfing the “1966 Banana” like driving an old Cadillac from 1966 without power steering. It’s going to take a some effort to crank a turn, it’s heavy, and you’ll probably pearl it if you take it into any waves that are fast and/or steep. However, once you get the hang of it, it’s a lot of fun!
The “Classic” is for the person looking to ride an old school log. It’ll be easier to turn and maneuver than the “1966 Banana” but it still won’t turn like a contemporary cruiser. Don’t worry, it won’t bite you!

“There may be something to be had with riding equipment that doesn’t make surfing easier. Surfing ancient equipment that is difficult to ride is an achievement in itself.”

Cool 70s Surfer Magazine- December 1974

A friend brought in cool vintage Surfer Magazine...December 1974. What a cool read! There were some really great ads that screamed 'transition era', along with some really rad photos and killer articles! What stood out to me was an article about Uluwatu, written by Neil Stebbins that had some unreal photography, including this one of Gerry Lopez carving a nice long, left wall.

Reno Abellira wrote a great piece on surfing the North Shore and Billy Hamilton wrote about The Duke Classic, won by Larry Bertleman in "windy, 12-15 foot Sunset Beach surf. The water was extremely demanding and the riptide at its very worst." "Real hold-your-ass stuff."

George, from Bridge Ave. Boards dropped off a few more handplanes...1 from multi colored foam and the other 2 from many types of wood. He's a real craftsman and does an awesome job with his shaping and finish work.

A good surfing buddy, Bob Lott, dropped off his original handplane that he shaped in 1982...solid balsa. He took a Lightning Bolt hand gun and shaped himself a balsa...and rode the heck out of it! Up and down the East Coast from New Jersey to Florida...Manasquan Inlet to Sebastian Inlet...this bad boy has seen lots of waves. Quite a few Barbadoes sessions as well...pretty cool!

We went old school on this one... Movie Night was held at the Bay Head Fire House and there was a bit of an art/photography show. We played the Malloy Brother's new movie Come Hell or High Water, followed by Thomas Campbell's Sprout. One of our surfing buddies, Jimmy, is an owner of Harpoon Willys... he brought an awesome spread of eats...some really great burger and pulled pork sliders and a bunch of other appetizers! Patagonia raffled off a couple of their unbelievable wetsuits, D. Mckenna and Brian Norling Photography raffled off some awesome local surf shots, Randy donated a real nice wooden handboard and Nate a cool bodysurfing drawing...sorry if I missed anyone.

A few years back, Patagonia invited myself and my manager at the time...Currie to come out to Ventura for a 'dealer camp'. We got to fly to California and see their facilities, try FCD Surfboards and Patagonia wetsuits. We stayed right on the pier and got a chance to meet Yvon Chounard, The Malloy Brothers, Mary Osborne, Mickey Munoz and the highlight of my trip, Gerry Lopez. One night Patagonia had a luau in honor of Gerry...we each got a copy of his book "Surf is Where You Find it" and had him sign it. What an awesome, humble guy...shared stories untill you were done listening.

As a kid, I remember seeing photos and watching footage of Gerry at Pipeline and just wishing that I could do what he was doing even a fraction as smooth as he was making it look. Gerry, in my eyes, is the epitome of style and grace under presure...he is the man. Thanks Gerry and Patagonia for the opportunity!

Boards, Boards and more boards

On Sunday, September 25th, we held our 9th Annual board swap...we invited Bing Copeland and Matt & Margaret Calvani to come out for the event. What an awesome, awesome day it was! Bing did a book signing and we sold through 49 books, including my own. I ordered some more and figured I can grab one when they're in. Each season, the event gets better and better and this one was the best. The weather was perfect, lots of really cool boards, cool people and the waves cooperated...waist to chest high peelers right up the end of the road...what more could you ask for? The after party was held at a local Slider restaurant in Point Beach...The Longboard Grill and John and Daryl did an awesome job. Merk threw in some Beach Haus beer and they were iced up and waiting. We did our 1st Swap tee, with artwork by local longboard stylist Alex Barlow...now in NC.

There were so many local stand out surfers, families, local legends, Bing team riders, hipsters and tons of cool old Bings. All in all 9 states were represented from California to Florida, NYC, NJ, Connecticut, Deleware, Maryland, PA and Massachusettes...not a bad showing. For me, the coolest boards I saw were brought by local surf legend Skip Fazio...a vintage emerald green Lightning Bolt with an electric blue bolt (used to hang over the counter of our 1st shop) and a near mint vintage Bing Nuuhiwa Noseriding Model. Personally, I had such a blast catching up with old friends, spending time with my family, the OLC crew and Bing, Matt and Margaret....what a cool day! Bob Barth showed up to catch up with Bing. Bob owned a shop in Brielle...West Wind Surf Shop... in the mid to late 60s and he carried Bing and Rick Surfboards exclusively. It was really cool to see these 2 catch up after all these years.

Just when you thought you saw so many Vintage Bings, local legend Carl Danish rolled up in his pick up truck with a dozen Vintage Bings. No padding, no straps, covered with wax and dirt...each one had a story and he let Bing and Matt hear each one. The coolest comment when Bing asked him how he got so many was..."I had a bunch more, but they were to deep under other vintage logs". What a cool guy.

Thanks so much to all my buddies and family that helped out so much...the day and event wouldn't have been pulled off without you guys. I'll pay you back...rest asured. It's that time of year...waves weather and surfboards! We're hosting our 9th Annual Fall, Old School Surf Swapmeet. It's always a great time and this one promises to be the best! We've got Legendary Surfer/Shaper, Bing Copeland coming out to do a book signing throughout the day...if you haven't checked out his new book, it's an awesome ride down memory lane. Coming out with Bing are current Bing Surfboards shaper Matt Calvani...a craftsman in his own right, and longboard surf stylist, Margaret Yao Calvani.

Our sign was stolen...reward for it's return!

A couple of nights ago, Monday the 22nd, our original Beach House Classic Boardshop sign was stolen from the front of the shop...really uncool. It was our 1st sign made 16 years ago and has big sentimental value....please keep your eyes open so we can get it back.

Return the sign unharmed no questions asked...just hang it back where it was or put it by the front door! If we find you, penalties will be HUGE! The surf community is small and we know tons of people ...you best have eyes in the back of your head! Big sentimental value that you can't put a price on!

Talked to the Bay Head Police...they're checking to see if the cameras at the Mount Street intersection show anything. The sign cost $1,100 back in 1996...no longer a petty theft! I Hope someone returns it before things get hairy! I've got some very angry friends just waiting to deal with the theft.

The original Islander's was owned by twin brothers...Ted and John Robinson. The Bay Head shop was around from 1964 to 1971 from what Ted told me. When I 1st opened the Beach House, I became good friends with Ted....he's an awesome guy...never met his brother. Ted lived on Princeton Ave. in Mantoloking, but sold the house about 5 years ago...he now lives outside of Boston and takes many surf trips in his small airplane to Block Island.

They opened the shop in 1964, 1st in Bay Head, then Mantoloking as well. They had several other short lived locations in Ortley, Ship Bottom and possibly others. They had 1 in Long Branch for some years...how and why this one was opened is a cool story in itself. They ran the shops while they attended college....1 at Yale and the other Harvard...really smart dudes....1600 SATs and all. Anyhow, they closed up the Bay Head and Mantoloking shops in 1971, but the Long Branch shop remained open. The Long Branch shop was being managed by Vince 'Peanuts' Troniec...they sold that shop to him and he ran it for quite a while until they changed the highway and the shop had to be torn down.

Sorry if there's any inconsistencies, but that's straight from Ted's mouth as he recalled things...there was more, but a different story for a different time. Some years back, Ted asked me to print some commemorative tees...for the Bay Head and Mantoloking shops only. We went over to his Mantaloking house and he peeled an original Islanders sticker from the upstairs window (still have it) and told me to print some up...we added "remembered" of course. We did them a couple of times over the years...this being 40 years after closing and with some of the locals asking for a re-run, I figured it was good timing. Ted always told me, "if anyone asks where they came from, tell em to contact me and I'll handle it". Owning a shop in Bay Head for 16 years, I've heard so many stories about the local shop and have seen quite a few boards from there...mostly Hansens.

I'd love to hear more stories, so share them if you've got them. Tees are available at the shop for sale and we can send them out if needed.

Lots of shops are having movie nights...and that's cool, but we decided to switch things up a bit and dig deep...all the way back to 1975! A good friend of mine came by the shop today and was so jazzed about a movie that he remembered as a kid and was able to find re-mastered on DVD! Mike has seen a ton of surf films spanning 40 years and tells me this one is one of the best...we'll also play 'A Day in the Life of Wayne Lynch' as a bonus (this is the flick that Mike tells me is actually The Best). Both of these give us a look back to when single fins ruled and some of the most inspirational surfing was being done...Wayne Lynch, Buttons MP, Rabbit, Gerry Lopez...all of the 70s big boys. I'm so pumped and blessed that brother Mike shared this with us...come watch Tubular Swells on the big (well pretty big) screen.

As always, this a FREE Community Event and should be an awesome time.

A few years back, I took a surf trip with 4 buddies to Baja Norte, Mexico. About an hour south of San Diego...we ran into some really fun surf! There was a nice right-hand, cobblestone point break just outside our house and a nice jetty set-up just to the south...no real crowds and lots of fun waves! A giant 150 foot statue of Jesus Christ sat up on the hill...you could see it from the lineup...what a comforting feeling.

As the story was told to us, a local Mexican family bought some land and divided it into lots...when they sold the 1st lot, they made back their money. On the 2nd lot, they built this awesome statue to Thank God for what he had given them...really cool story.

We played Walking on Water and the night was sponsored by Christian Surfers Manasquan...DJ Trish opened the night with some music. It was a really cool surf community event with kids from all over Ocean County coming out to share in a great time! This is the start of our 16th year...crazy yes but 16 it is! Seems like only yesterday. We've always been from the 'ride everything' mentality...heck, we live on the East Coast...we need to ride everything. There's alot of board design going on out there right now...our FOCUS is on what we like to call Solution Boards. Boards that allow us to catch lots of waves...whether they're weak and mushy or fast and hollow, these boards solve the problem with our beach breaks. We need to catch waves early and get up and ride...if you're not catching the waves, you're not riding and if you're not riding then you're not having fun. After all, isn't that what surfing is all about...having fun?

I think Richard Kenvin said it best..."We've got an infinite # of choices to do this thing...starting with no board at all. Most of us don't make a living competing with the best surfers in the world. It's a total delusion that we can't ride whatever we want...because we can ride whatever we want." A couple weeks back, I posted a story about local legend, who recently passed away, Fred Knapp. We had the ceremonial paddle out and gave Freddie the propper send off...we got in a circle and each told a story. I shared this story about Fred at Makaha, the day Greg Noll caught his infamous wave...

"It was a bunch of years back. I've got an early 60s Greg Noll Surfboard hanging on the wall in the shop. Fred got talking about Greg and how he looked up to his big wave surfing ability and how he visited Hawaii in the late 1960s. He said it was 1969 and he was in Makaha...they were getting hit with a huge swell. Only the best of the best big wave riders were out. He watched as Greg Noll paddled out and sat in the line up for a long time. He went on to tell me how he saw Greg catch one of the biggest waves he had ever seen! Freddie was referring to the infamous December 4th, 1969, where Greg Noll surfed what is still considered to be one of the biggest waves ever paddled into. Fred was there! He ran down the beach and retrieved the famed yellow board that was ridden that day and gave it back to Greg. He went home and came back to the shop with photos of the day and of the ride. There they were...I held them in my hands. You could see the wave and the surfer...he was there all right! Fred was a local legend and will be greatly missed."

A few days later, Fred's wife came into the shop to let us know she appreciated what we all did and to drop off this photo. She was going through some stuff and came across this shot that Fred took that day...I had goose bumps! Freddie was there...

8th Annual Board Swap goes off....

Yesterday was a great day...the best turnout we've had yet. Had a chance to see some old friends and meet some new ones as well. The front of the shop was loaded to the sidewalk with a really cool selection of boards from the 1960s, 70s, 80s and modern ones as well...not really sure how to spot a 90s board, but am sure there were some. The place was packed with local legends, industry figures, groms and all in between...loaded with Real Surfers. From what I saw, there were folks from Boston to Maryland and all had a great time. The weather held out and there were even some waves to be had.

There was a real nice display of boards...from modern Hap Jacobs, Harbours, Bings, Phillips, Tylers, Yaters, Campbell Brothers Bonzers to old school pintails and logs. Lightning Bolts, Gordies, Casters, Weber Performers, G&S...all for the taking. My favorite was a transition era Velzy V bottom...really cool board. And yes...there were some hipsters.

Thanks to al that came, helped out, bought boards, supplied the food, supported the shop and had a great time.

The man & one of his many boards

Tuesday March 22nd, 2011, we lost a great man, a dedicated member of our surfing tribe...Freddie Knapp. Anyone that surfed Bay Head and surrounding beaches knew who Freddie was...if not by name, certainly by face. Fred surfed here year round since 1964, untill a back injury sidelined him a couple years ago...he still checked the surf and dropped by to talk stories on a regular basis. Big Fred will be missed in our lineups, as he was an original, a true classic.

I think Steve Messenger said it best. "A Surfer through and through...Freddie started surfing in 1964, the year I was born. To say that he was one of the original surfers in this Northern Ocean County area would be accurate, and has been a part of the surfing culture from Pt. Pleasant to Normandy Beach. I surfed with Freddy ... he was always with a smile and a good word... even if he wasn't feeling well... you never knew he had a bad day."

Local surfer, Jeff Beverly Sr. had this to say. "I surfed with Fred for many years in Bay Head. He was a great guy and I will miss seeing him checking the waves. Gone but never forgotten. RIP old friend.<3"

I know we all have our memories of Fred...for me, I'll miss surfing with him and his frequent visits to the shop. He would stop by, always with a smile on his face and always a good word. I need to share my favorite story Freddie told me.

The water is still 43 degrees, so if you chose to stay on the beach, that's fine...all are welcome and appreciated. Please pass the word along to any one that knew Fred.

Obituary:

Frederic B. Knapp, 67, of Point Pleasant Beach, passed away suddenly Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at his vacation home in New Foundland, PA. Born on Staten Island, New York, he lived there for 20 years before moving to Point Pleasant Beach in 1964. Mr. Knapp served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a driver for Texaco for 20 years and then a salesman for Surf Chevrolet in Point Pleasant Beach for 20 years before retiring. Freddie was an avid surfer who enjoyed fishing and spending quality time with his family and friends at Normandy Beach.

He was preceded in death by his sister in law, Maureen O'Shaughnessy and brothers in law, Ed and Bill Finnerty. Surviving are the love of his life, his beloved wife of 47 years Patricia Finnerty Knapp, his loving daughter, Colleen Knapp of Toms River, the light of his life, his cherished granddaughter, Carlie, his dear sisters, Elizabeth Knapp of New Foundland, PA and Michele Parzych and husband Will of Moscow, PA, his nieces, Maureen O'Shaughnessy, Allison Glossinger and husband Jason, Barbara Parzych, and nephews Eddie and Jerry O'Shaughness, cousins, Walter, Scott and Allen Ireland.

I came across a forum posting looking for information about a 1960s surfboard, for sale in New Jersey...the label was "Mal-Mar Surfboards". I remember talking with "Balsa" Bill Yerkes a few years back about locally made surfboards from the 1960s...this one rang a bell. I remember him telling me that "Mal Mar" meant "bad ocean" or "sea sickness"...not so cool on a surfboard. I contacted him and here's what he had to say...

It was Johnny Mara and Joe Malozzi. They summered in Lavallette. Johnny had been a lifeguard. Don't
know about Joe. They started out with homemade boards and were weekend surfers. They surfed with Charlie Keller, Jimmy Crecca, Jack Homer, Richie Baron, the Mrozak brothers (Archie and Bobby), and a couple of other brothers who's name I forgot.

They were all out the first day I paddled out in Lavallette on my homeade board in 1962. Actually I had surfed on a neighbor's 8' Aquaplane in the late fifties but it was hard to stand on. Flat with no fin. I had come back from California in 1961 and we built a board that winter.

In 1964 or '65 Johnny and Joe started making boards under the Mal Mar label in North Jersey somewhere. Probably in their garage or basement. They didn't make many. A friend of mine had one. And Bobby Ekstrom won the Atlantic States in Seaside the first year (1964?) on one of their first homemade no label models. I had almost bought the board but bought a custom Keller instead.
I remember they had one that said "Playboy" on it. Don't know if it said Mal Mar too. Their first
boards didn't have a label. That's true of most of the homemade's from that era.

Last time I saw them was at Charlie Keller's funeral. 1996

Bill is a very integral part of our local surfing history...and a really nice guy as well. Through the 1960s, from Point Pleasant to Seaside Park...Balsa Bill has some serious knowledge! You can check out his 60s surf film, "The Summer of '67" at the shop.

Old School Swap Meet - Sunday April 10th...be there.

It's that time of year again...actually we're running things a month or so earlier than usual. It's been a long, cold winter and it's time for surfboards and a good time! Pat and I started this tradition 5 years ago and it picks up steam each year...we'll get 100 plus boards out if front, around the side and in back of the shop. We attract people from Cape May to Brooklyn and as far as Virginia Beach and Boston...it's a really cool event that I look forward to every Spring and Fall. The focus is on "Vintage" riders from the 60s, 70s and 80s...lately we've extended things to include modern day longboards, alternative and solution boards as well. We'll get some classic skateboards and some surfing memorabilia from time to time. It attracts all types from collectors, surfers, long-time members of the surfing community and people that just love the surf culture. We'll have some food and drink...Harry usually brings the coffee and we roll out the BBQ later in the day.

It's different than other "Board Swaps" because we just supply the place and the atmosphere for the event to happen. We don't take any money or force you to take store credit for what you've sold. It's another event that we, at the Beach House put together to continue to build a Surfing Community in our neck of the woods...that's what it's all about; surf culture.

My indoor surfboard repair facility has been upgraded...full on fluorescent lights installed through the whole space as well as electrical outlets all over! No more running extension cords and blowing fuses...Herman is the man!

With the economy being what it is, board repairs are coming out of the woodwork. Everything from tiny rail dings to full on restorations. I've seen more boards in the past 2 months than I had most of last year...I love the work but can't wait to get caught up. Even better...I can't wait to get outside, much better for the lungs. If you've got boards that need to be repaired, bring em in...here's a quick glimpse at my new room. Enjoy your day!

This 9'9" Classic Greg Noll found it's way into the shop a little while ago. Vintage early to mid 1960’s Greg Noll stock pig shape in real nice condition. Glassed on single fin with Greg Noll lam and trademark chopstick inside the fin...a bit hard to see, but they are there! Red resin panels top & bottom, 3/4 inch redwood stringer with layered wood tailblock...deck and bottom are in real nice condition and all original. "Greg Noll" in lam is faded out, but still there. Cool piece for hangin or riding...$750 SOLD

My 1st Surfboard

My 1st board was a mid 70's - 6' Michaels Fremont single fin...double ender. My Dad bought it for $50 from a buddy in 1979...it hangs on the ceiling of my shop. Learned to surf that summer at Nauset Beach in Orleans, Cape Cod...down on the south end past the guards. My pops took myself and a buddy to Jasper's Surf Shop and we rented wetsuits for the 59 degree water...no leashes, didn't know what one was. After swiming a whole lot in the cold(er) water, we went back to Jaspers and he drilled a hole in the fin and put on a leash and we rented a couple of wetsuits. That was the coolest summer...one I will always remember.

3 or 4 years ago I had it in the window at the shop for display...got an early morning message from a guy claiming he shaped the board. Met up with him later and found out it was Mickey Fremont...now a lawyer in Encinitas, CA. He was in the area for a wedding and was trying to track down some of his old boards. He grew up in NYC and he and a buddy shaped boards on the 3rd floor of his buddy's parents department store. He hung in the shop that morning and shared stories of shaping boards in the 70s and growing up in NYC. Turns out mine was glassed at the famed Channin Glass Factory in Encinitas...he could tell by the pinlines He wanted to buy the board, but I wouldn't let it go...Mickey appreciated that someone wanted it as much as he did. Meeting Mickey was way cool...a real nice guy and a piece of surf history.

Jasper's Surf Shop...a true classic & my first real Surf Shop experience.

Jasper's Surf shop in Eastham, Mass, Cape Cod...since 1967. The building is still there on Route 6A, a few miles north of the Orleans rotary. As a kid, my Dad would take us there to rent Sunfish sailboats and to look at the longboards and Birdwells...my Dad didn't surf, so this was all foreign to me. I can remember walking into the shop and stepping onto the sand floors...there wasn't much in there, but what was in there was cool. There were some transition single fins, longboards, Birdwells, tee shirts, stickers and really cool local surf shots on the wall...the place was dripping with Soul. Jaspers is also connected with Wellfleet's "Old Timers's Surf Classic" held each summer.

The summer I started surfing, 1979, we got up to the Cape in August...my Dad had just bought me my 1st Surfboard, a 5'10" Michaels Freemont single fin, double ender. My buddy Doug had just picked up his 1st board at a garage sale...a mini mal McTavish Tracker. We were ready to go. We got down to Nauset Beach and found some waist high peelers rolling in by the south unguarded beach. We jumped in and caught a couple waves...the water was 59 degrees. Not a problem, except we didn't have any wetsuits...or leashes for that matter. We did lots of swimming that morning...and got really cold! We asked one of the local surfers where to rent a suit...or a 'smug' as he callled it. He sent us to Jaspers and we rented a couple suits. I got an old O'neill long john and Doug got an old 3/2 full...made all the difference in the world. Later that week, we got up for a dawn patrol session and found Doug's suit missing...they were drying out on the railing of our deck. We were staying at a little cottage in Orleans, right on Boland's Pond, behind Ellis Market and the Nauset Middle School. As we thought what happened, we realized that we had just heard the garbage truck. Even though the garbage men denied it, we knew what happened...problem was, we had to explain it to Jasper. The guys were cool and we got another suit...they treated us well and earned our business.

We paid our dues that summer, got some fun waves and knew we were hooked. I'll never forget that summer and all the fun Doug and I had learning to surf and learning to respect the ocean. Thanks Dad for getting me my 1st surfboard, (it still hangs on the ceiling of our shop) thanks Doug for sharing those awesome early days and thanks Jasper's Surf Shop for showing us the way and trating us like surfers and not the kooks that we really were.

Today is the anniversary of "The Miracle on Ice"...February 22, 1980. I wasn't a huge Hockey fan, but as a 15 year old boy growing up in the Northeast, Olympic Hockey was the ultimate! The Winter Olympics were held in Lake Placid, NY and the USA Hockey team was made up of a bunch of no-name college players with a whole ton of heart. The Russian Red Machine had won 8 of the last 9 Olympic Hockey gold medals, including the past 4 in a row. They haden't lost an Olympic hockey game since 1968...and were clearly the best hockey team in the world and the clear favorite to win the Gold Medal. I remember it like it was yesterday!

There's no mystery...the economy is rough to say the least. Things are bad out there...the more you look around, the more you see it. At the end of each month, you see more and more empty stores and more and more "Going out of Business" signs. I like to think we're as far down as we can go and the only way is up...not sure if I'm right, but the optimist in me is telling me so. You wonder what it is you can do to help...surely shopping locally can help. Over the past year, I know that I've been making a concentrated effort to support my local businesses...the ones that support local families and treat me right. Another board from the ceiling of the shop. This is a 1971 Transition Era Single Fin, 6'0", shaped by Nat Young...cutting edge for its time. Grog (from the famed Grog's Surf Palace in Seaside) had Nat Young shape about 20 of these beauties and had Rise Surfboards and Glassing glass em up...in Northern Monmouth County. The original owner won this beauty at a "movie night" in Ortley Beach back in 1971...nice ride.

This past Saturday Night...February 5th, Professional surfer Jesse Hines and Esther Faith played a concert at the Manasquan Recreation Center. The Christian Surfers of Manasquan sponsored the event and food was brought in by Fins and Jersey Mikes...it was an awesome time! I went over with my son Shane, & Derek... Nestor, Tommy Moran and the rest of the Christian Surfers did a great job putting things together. Jesse and Esther Faith played some great music...Jesse showed his testimonial; what an awesome roll model for young kids & man does he rip! The two of them are awesome people...they talked with everyone and shared surf stories and Faith stories and were super down to earth. I look forward to the next event.

Leroy Grannis, the Grandfather of Surf Photography has sadly passed away at 93. Surf photography gets no better. Challenger Eastern Revived? Visit from Tinker...

My Challenger Eastern tailblock & fin

Right before Christmas we had a cool visit from a surfboard building legend...Carl "Tinker" West. Tinker owned and shaped surfboards for Challenger Eastern Surfboards in Neptune, NJ in the early to mid 1960's. Born out of the San Diego label Challenger Surfboards, Tinker saw a large market in the Northeast and after a quick stop in Florida, set up shop in Neptune.

My son and I were working the shop and a throwback lookin guy came in with his girlfriend...we asked them if they needed help and they politely said "no thanks" and got lost looking around at the boards hanging in the shop. After a while, they walked towards the front counter and I overheard him tell her "it used to be in here, but they must have gotten rid of it". Just as I asked him what it was he was looking for, he pointed up to the super clean Challenger Eastern slider above the counter and said "There it is, I shaped that board, that was my label". With what I knew about the Challenger Eastern, I figured I was either talking to Michelle Junod, Jim Phillips or more than likely Tinker...I knew what Junod and Jim Phillips look like from photos, so I reached my hand out and said Tinker, it's a pleasure to meet you. I made sure my son realized we were looking at a Surf Industry legend...especially here in the Northeast.

Tinker called up one of his buddies, Rick Barry, and asked him to come down to the shop...as it turns out, Rick was Tinker's salesman. As Tinker put it, "I hired him because I was such a pain in the ass to deal with and Rick knew how to handle people. If I had to deal with people we wouldn't have sold any damn surfboards". We talked for quite a while and they talked story about the good ole days. They told us about the days with Bruce Springsteen playing in the back of the factory (Steel Mill I believe), they talked about their California days, teaching Michelle Junod how to surf and shape, told us about his dealings with Jim Phillips in the early days, and when he first came to NJ and what they called the different town. If I can remember right, Manasquan was Manasquat..."an Indian walked up to the Inlet and saw a white guy takin a dump and said Manasquat", Bay Head was "Head's by the Bay", Asbury Park was Raspberry Park, Sea Girt, Sea Grit, Point Un-Pleasant, and lots more. We talked for a bit about the way his "Challenger Eastern" label was taken from under him by the guys at Rockaway Beach Surf Shop and being bastardized in China.

Bottom line, it looks like Tinker, Rick Barry and Jim Phillips will be making a handful of Classic replicas for sale in select shops...Pretty cool! Sounds like they got the templates from Michelle Junod's shop and are going to build some at Jim's place and have Channin glass them. This was just what they were throwing around, so let's see what develops. For my son and I it was a really awesome stroll through some cool New Jersey surfing history.

An old Cat that wandered into the shop...

A little ways ago a Vintage Greg Noll Cat wandered into the shop...A solid example of Miki Dora's signature model. It has seen more wear than it would have liked, but is still solid. The fin is nice and in great shape, the lam is in nice shape except the "greg Noll" is faded, there are no delams on the board, just dings and some water damage but not soft. The board hasn't seen water in over 10 years and weighs real close to what it weighed when new...no excess water weight. 9'8"...22 wide... 3 plus thick, 16" nose and 16" tail...FOR SALE -*SOLD*

A Few memories of Last week's Blizard...

What a wild storm this one was...I can't remember a crazier snowstorm in NJ...ever! We got a total of 34 inches....34 inches! What's crazy is that it all fell in less than 24 hours. The winds were humming at about 30 to 45mph causing blizzard conditions and almost no visibility...not great to be outside. The worst part of the whole thing was the lack of waves. For those that could get there, there were chest high waves for half a day.

The BEST part of the whole thing is that the conditions caused me to come to a grinding hault...I got to spend tons of time with my family...and that's what life is really all about!

Potatoes for Thanksgiving...or for Swells.

A couple of boards from my Fall quiver. Tony at Clean Ocean Surfboards is making a super versatile shape...the Hot Potato. I've been riding a 6'10" for quite a while and just started riding a 6'4"...check em out. I've got a 6'2" on the shop's rack and have done custom orders from 5'10"to 6'10" and all sizes in between.

The fuller outline helps catch waves much better...lots of down the line speed. Good entry rocker helps make drops when things get steeper. Good 'v' through the bottom makes these turn on a dime.

4th Annual - Kenny Tooker Longboard Classic - 2010

Each year, Kenny's wife Krissy gets together a crew of Kenny's best friends, family, helpers and sponsors and puts together an awesome event in his honor...this year was no exception and possibly the best yet. In Krissy's words: "Originally this event was being billed as a "contest" but, the gears have shifted to a more family oriented day and is now the Kenny Tooker Memorial Classic. It just seems more fitting .... Kenny was a Classic. Kenny lived each day with the Aloha spirit and that is something that will live on in all of us that were lucky enough to have crossed his path. This annual event is not to remind us of our loss, but more importantly, what we gained by knowing him." The event raises money for Scholarships given to Senior students from Point Pleasant High School in Kenny's name.

We had tons of volunteers from Surf Taco, The Beach House, Christian Surfers, Rock n Joe's Coffee, Skullcandy, Hyperflex Wetsuits, Single Fin, Dunkin Donuts to name a few...the list goes on and on!

Awesome, awesome day! I look forward to this day all year and am so happy that it worked out the way it did. Kenny does it every year…really makes everything come together. The waves, the weather, the people. I don’t think Karge St. has... broken that well in months. I can’t remember feeling so much aloha and stoke in the line-up and such great surfing in a really long time. I am blessed to be such a part of great day that celebrates Kenny’s impact on all of us. He was truly an awesome soul and it shows with the turnout that we get each year and how many people come out to help. I see so many guys that never surf contests and so many guys that don’t really longboard come out and join us for such a great day! I think Tom (Moran from Christian Surfers) made a great point when he said that we need to live each day like it’s our only day and make the most of each one.

I grew up surfing in the late 70s through the 80s and 90s and straight to 2010...I've ridden everything from longboards to eggs, shortboards, fish, 80s thrusters to modern day longboards and true Classic logs. I'm not exactly thrilled with 'modern day' shortboarding...especially the equipment being pushed on the masses of wannabe, shortboard kids...the average kid just can't ride em...period. That said, I still really appreciate what the top level pros are doing and how they're pushing the limits of modern day shortboarding! I haven't seen a shortboard video that peaked my interest since "Searchin for Tom Curren"...till the 2010 Trestles pro Highlights! Check it out! A cool side note...almost 20 years to the day, Slater won his 1st pro contest at Trestles. One of the guys he beat that contest was hot shredder Dino Andino...this year, he beat current hot shredder and Dino's son, Kolohe Andino. Pretty cool!
