This vintage longboard showed up at the shop last week and is a really cool example of some of the innovative things shapers were doing in the early 1960s. It's a 9'8" South Bay Surf Shop, custom by Deese...complete with his signature Tunnel Fin. From the research I've done, it seems that South Bay Glasser and Shaper Rich Deese came up with the idea of the Tunnel Fin. Deese was part of the South Bay's 1st St. Gang with guys like Dewey Weber and Bibby Gibson. He learned to shape with Velzy and glassed for a while at the Weber shop.

I had one of these boards back in 1965-66. I was going to sell them on the East Coast in Lavallette, NJ. I could ride the nose real good on this longboard. Looked prettier than these photos. Wish I could find some old pics. I do have the dusty old sew on emblem/logo about 12 inches high. If someone is interested, I'm in Dana Point, CA. bob@excelsearch.com
